I think your 70's example is going back a little too far. multiple user accounts very common even today. Integration was there for systems in the 70's and many didnt hit you up with the username/password entry requirement. A lot of systems I used in the 80's just let you in if you new how to get to them. Remember passwords were more used for identity uniqueness - john with password A and John with password B are two different John's.
